The new season is only a short period away, and football fans will already be dreaming of their team reaching Super Bowl LVI.
Scheduled for February 6 at the Sofi Stadium, Inglewood, California, Kansas City Chiefs will be hoping to put last year’s disappointment behind them and capture their second title in three years. It will be the first Super Bowl hosted in California since Super Bowl 50 when the Broncos beat the Panthers at the Levi’s Stadium. Will either of those be troubling the final this season?
While every franchise dreams of winning this year’s title, only two will contest it and only one will come out on top. Who are the early favorites to thrill us at Super Bowl LVI? We’ve picked four you should be keeping an eye on this season.
Kansas City Chiefs
There’s no doubt the Chiefs will be in the mix at the end of the season, as they’re the dominant side in the NFL right now. They were red-hot favorites to beat the Buccaneers back in February and have kept the team’s core together for the new season. Patrick Mahomes is the star man, and they’ve made only minor tweaks around him and have looked solid in training. They’re a relatively new name in terms of Super Bowl success, but they are set to create a multi-year dynasty if they keep playing as they have been.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
These really are crazy times in the NFL, with previously unfancied teams beginning to dominate the sport. The Bucs have done exactly what the Chiefs have done – kept the squad together and added to the roster, rather than weakened it. They were rampant at Super Bowl LV and will be likely to challenge again. Their obvious star man is Tom Brady, one of the most famous players in the world, but the likes of Devin White and Mike Evans also had solid seasons and will be even better this time out.
The Browns are one of just four teams never to have appeared in a Super Bowl (the others are the Lions, Texans and Jaguars), but there’s a real feeling around the city that they might be in with a shot this year. Baker Mayfield is set to be a star for them, and he recently told CBS he doesn’t give a damn about a contract extension; he’s only focused on winning. With JadeveonClowney joining the team this season, they’re in better shape to finally break their Super Bowl duck.
Green Bay Packers
This year, the top three fancied teams are not those with a long and rich history in the final, but the Packers are. They’re one of the most famous names in the NFL, with Bwin explaining how they have four Super Bowl wins and have had the MVP on eight occasions. Whether they can keep Aaron Rodgers happy for another season is the big question, but if they can, then they might be in with a shout of a fifth Super Bowl title and maybe even another MVP to add to their long list of previous winners.
The Bills will always be a threat with Josh Allen conducting the show, and if they can improve on their defense, they’ll be a challenger. The 49ers are an interesting prospect too, with Trey Lance on the cusp of breaking through. Don’t discount the Chargers either; Justin Herbert will be better after his rookie season, and Derwin James should be fit and ready to impress as well.
